Dj Trev's Personal Chart. Tunes I'm loving.

Nb : This chart is based on nothing more scientific that the fact I enjoy playing these records. It's not affected by play lists, individual night policies, or huge financial bribes from people. But don't let that stop you trying. I am very much for sale...

also, please note, I will try update this more often. But don't bet on it.

Position Artist Title Briefly
#1 Pendulum Propane nightmare Their Firestarter, this should propel this band to stella proportions. Fucking brilliant!
#2 M.I.A. Paper planes weird artist who I'm too far north to get away with much, but this oozes summer. and it's got a gun shot in it innit.
#3 The Ting Tings That's not my name Brilliant pop with a fit bird and a bloke who looks like I wanna look.
#4 Fallout Boy Beat it Easy as anything, totally unnecessary, but still, banging!
#5 fragma & coco Miracle 2008 Wideboys bassline remix Farty garage remix of a vocal trancy house tune? makes perfect sense.
#6 Flow Rider feat. T-Pain Low Fucking right tune, it's not R'n'B, it's hip hop.
#7 Disney Spears Gimme more Well mental but making the best music of her career, so it's swings and roundabouts.
#8 Dj Trev & Lee Attack Tori Ok, not  really one of my top tunes right now, but no one is asking me "what's this called"when I play it, and so, you know...
#9 Alter Ego Why not Stupid electro dance hugeness
#10 Wiley Wearing my rolex the novelty wore off quickly, but it's still well good.

Top 3 current-ish  albums artist title go on then..
1 Cancer Bats Actually, both their albums on one cd, which I done on I-tunes Lots of American headcharge style vocals, with pummeling hardcore to metal core to party core. Crazy.
2 Hadouken Music for an accelerated generation Could have done with coming out 6 months earlier, but good grime tinged nu-rave that actually does sound like rave.
3 Scooter jumping all over the world Dance music in an almost  parody style.

Top Ten pop rock Records of 2007

as played at Bottom of the Bottle's New Years party

 new years eve 11.30 - 12pm

10 Foo Fighters "The pretender" Still got it.
9 The Wombats "Let's dance to joy division" didn't like this at first but it's infectious like herpes.
8 Klaxons "not over yet" great cover of a classic, even if new rave never got going in Harrogate.
7 Arctic Monkeys "Brianstorm" A second brilliant album and these guys seem like the real deal.
6 Kaiser Chiefs "Ruby" Indie anthem from the guys who seemed unlikely to do good songs without going "Woooooooooooooooh", but did with aplomb.
5 Avril Lavigne "Girlfriend" Awesome pop. If you're too cool to like this you suck.
4 Hadouken "That boy that girl" Grimey ravey brilliance that technically I've played since 2006 but it was a big one for me in 07
3 Linkin Park "Bleed it out" Worth the wait.
2 My Chemical Romance "Teenagers" Hugely overrated album, but this always stood out, brilliantly different pop.
1 Fallout Boy "Arms race" All the anti Emo people with little idea of what they are actually on about types will disagree, but this is a power pop anthem worth holding a party for.

Albums wise in 2007 Everytime I Die have their third  top of the year album for me in "The Big Dirty", joined by Alexisonfire (albeit with their 2006 "Crisis") and I can't separate those two and give you an absolute album of the year, save to say buy them both. There were lots of other interesting albums in 07, Kate Nash, Lethal Bizzle, Roll Deep, Arctic monkeys, Reuben, Evile, Fallout Boy, Enter Shikari, Billy Talent, to name a few, but whilst they were all very good or at least good,  ETID & AIOF really stood head and shoulders above the rest. The were also lots of great dance tracks in 07, and shockingly even some good Hip Hop ones (though, as usual, very very few decent R'n'B tracks) Timbalands "The way I are" crossed the bridge between those two confusing genre's and pop fantastically, The Creeps "The freeks (get on the floor)" headed up the commercial dance scene that's annoyingly referred to as Electro when really it's just this seasons current house sound, and Arctic Monkeys "Teddy Picker" was one of my favourite indie tunes. It has to be said that I think 2007 was a very good year for pop, but there were too many simply good albums, and not enough great ones. that's my opinion anyway, and seeing as you're taking the time to read this I thought I'd give you it, 2007 was the year for me I discovered I-Tunes, which is brilliant for buying the odd track you want to hear without having to load up on an album you are not so bothered about, and I must say you really should do that rather than illegally downloading something for free. Again, only my opinion but it seems logical that a band who do it professionally are going to be a lot better than an act who have to record in between working at the office/down the pit/pulling tricks for $10.

Although if Christina ever ends up doing that I'll be a happy shopper.

Top Ten Dancefloor rock Records of 2006

as played Saving Sunday /Bottom of the Bottle New Years party

 new years eve 11.30 - 12pm

10 My Chemical Romance "Welcome to the Black parade" Queen esque punk rock opera
9 Panic!at the disco "I write sins not tragedies" still hard work on the dance floor but arty emo brilliance to piss off twats who go on about hating emo, even though no one knows what it is still
8 Evanescence "Cal me when you're sober" least expected comeback of the year.
7 Stone Sour "30-30-150" bit f a cheat on my part, as "Through glass is better, this is just easier to play at a Metal Night innit?
6 Trivium "Dying in your arms"  brilliantly accessible track from promising sophomore band before they did the awful "Anthem"
5 Fall out Boy "Dance Dance" best track of the best album of the year. Hate emo? Only listen to pre 1991 metal? Fuck off you boring cunt.
4 Klaxons "Atlantis to Interzone"  most exciting thing of the year.
3 The Automatic "Monster"   lookied like the big one for a long time, drunk singalong anthem.
2 Arctic Monkeys "I bet that you look good on the dancefloor" was this 2006 or 2005? very late or very early, very very good!
1 The Fratellis "Chelsea Dagger"  a great rock track for a dj, full on party anthem. Skillfest.

My fave album of 2006 was Fallout Boy's "From under the cork tree" - really, if your myspace has shit like kill al emo's written on it, take a long hard look at yourself. I also really liked Snow Patrol's "Eyes open", The Killers "Sam's Town" and The Streets "A grand don't come for free" which of course didn't come out in 2006, I just got into them in 2006, so it was new to me.
Christ, if you're not bored yet - as i am a pop DJ here are my top pop tunes of '06, in no particular order : Justice Verses Simian "We are your friends"; Body Rox "Yeah yeah" - I'm even all turned around on th vocal to, it's quality; Orson "No tomorrow" - lovely crap; Mason "Exceeder" - not pop yet, but let's not get any more anal; Girls Aloud "Somethng kind of ooh"; Justin Timberlake "Sexy back"; Christina Aguelera "Ain't no other man" & of course the top 4 from my Rockers. A good year of music then, now it's all about The Klaxons delivering...

Top Ten Pop Records of 2005

as played in Jacks Bar  new years eve 11.30 - 12pm

10 Audio Bulleys "Bang bang" Sounds like they made it on a ZX spectrum. Ace.
9 Tony Christie "Is this the way to Amarillo" Before this was annoying (ie after two weeks), this was a right bez!
8 Kaiser Chiefs "Every day I love you less and less" Sounds like they made it on a ZX spectrum. Ace.
7 Chemical Bros. "Galvanize" Dance floor filler on all of my nights for a while.
6 Kanye West "Gold digger" R'n'B is shit. Hip hop still stands a chance though.
5 Pussy Cat Dolls "Don't cha" The first time I've charted a record that I don't like in my top ten of the year. The reason being this is undeniably one of the biggest pop records of the year, being totally massive, and not really a bad song, I just think its average and don't like it myself. Busta can certainly do better.
4 Mylo "Dr. Pressure" One of my favourites of 2004, it got the response it deserved, even if it did have to get a bit of a cheesy bootleg treatment on the way. Like many boots, not as good as the original, but people love extra cheese.
3 Body Rockers "I like the way you move" Vast guitars and dance music, biggest dance track for some long time.
2 The Kaiser Chiefs "I predict a riot" Blur for the new millennium, party pop indie for getting drunk to and not understanding the lyrics.
1 The Killers "Somebody told me" The band that mostly everyone has been into for ages apart from the really cool kids who don't like them anymore. Try hard cool that works. And even mums and dads like them.
top three albums of 2005 artist title go on then..
1 System of a Down Mesmerise Or is it Hypnotise? The first one at any rate, as the second one is still settling. The only dancefloor heavieness of the year.
2 Everytime I Die Gutter Phenomenon Even better than the first one, partycore meets rock and roll in a stunning combo!
3 Oasis Don't believe the truth come back album of the year, from the band that were shit for a bit.

Top 5 Pop Records of 2004

as played in Bar Med  new years eve 11.20 - 12pm

This Week Title Comments
1 Franz Ferdinand "Take me out" One that was massive, then wasn't, then was again. In the year that arty indie took over, these guys were kings.
2 Outkast Technically the tail end of 2003 I think, but too big to ignore.
3 Scissor Sisters "Laura" Ok, I got it wrong about this band.
4 Eric Prydz "Call on Me" Nice video..... and fortunately a nice bit of filter house to go with it.
5 Armand Van Helden "My my my" Armand is still on the go, and this is one of his finer moments.
top three albums of 2004 artist title go on then..
1 Slipknot Volume 3 : The Subliminal Verses Was hoping and expecting something amazing, but couldn't believe just what was delivered. Acoustic (yes that's right) tracks of true beauty sit next to thrash hardcore and grind amazingly. Utterly essential!
2 Reuben Racecar is Race Car Backwards UK hard rock cum post hardcore brilliance, and with a new album already in the pipeline things look better than good!
3 Everytime I Die Hot Damn! Super frantic mathcore metal. and I met them too, and for once they didn't seem to hate me!

Top Ten Pop Records of 2003

as played in Bar Med  new years eve 11.20 - 12pm

This Week Title Comments
1 Darkness "I Believe in a thing called love" Cock Rock returns, and lots of us spend ages saying how we were into this band before everyone else. And everyone else yawns.
2 Fatman Scoop "Be faithful" "I was playing this before loads of other dj's". Like you care. Pop-hop party classic.
3 Beyonce "Crazy in love" In the year that "R'n'B" took over the world, this is done the way it should be. ie: genuine pop with hip hop production values courtesy of Jay-z. This isn't really R'n'B if we are being purist. This is straight up pop, and it's great.
4 Electric 6 "Danger! High voltage!" Disco rock dance floor cool
5 Junior Senior "Everybody" A shocking year for dance music again, but some people still have nice ideas.
6 Benni Benassi "Satisfaction" See above
7 Tomcraft "Happiness" The second of 2 tracks that shit all over the competition in the world of commercial dance.
8 Lummi Dee "Uhh ooh" Awesome with quality remixes too.
9 Sean Paul "Work it" Commercial dance hall with underground roots. Apache Indian this is not.
10 Jamelia "Superstar" Pop fest for the girls.
top three albums of 2003 artist title go on then..
1 Iron Maiden Dance of Death The first 'Maiden album I ever bought. The best live band of the year, and I really need to sort out my back catalogue.
2 Katatonia Viva Emptiness Dark downbeat metal of anthemic proportions
3 Poison the Well You come before you Everyone goes screamo, and this was the pick of it.

Top Ten Pop Records of 2002

as played in Jimmys main room new years eve 11.20 - 12pm

This Week Did it make this chart? Title Comments Release / Out Now
1 Yes  Eminem  "Without me"  Perhaps a return to form then this year for Mr M, after the whole D12 thang... On the slim shady show. 8 mile soundtrack is better in my opinion though.
2 yes Sugar Babes "Freak like me"  much was made of the lack of originality of this essentially bootleg style release - but if you ask me its the sound of pop producers getting it right. for examples of getting it wrong see gates and young's management working out which ridiculously over covered song the gay/should be gay boy wonders will do next. But given it will still go #1 I doubt they'll lose sleep over the fact I disparage their shit. I would guess this is on their album, but not one I'd buy...
3 yes  Disney spears  "I love rock n roll"
Another  cover, but it is a track that can take it, in that it was never as big a hit as it should have been. And Girls who say that Britney isn't attractive simply make themselves look foolish.
Your probably on a safe bet with her albums now, but i kind of got my fingers burnt getting her first one...
4 yes Big Brovas "Nu Flow" well, shut my mouth. when i first heard this i slagged it right off. proof that good will overcome. When I've managed to form an opinion on this album you'll be the first to know.
5 No  No Doubt "Hella Good" No doubt No Doubt's poppy direction will have pissed off a lot of Try hard punk types, but pretty much everything pisses them off, and seeing as it's illegal for them to be into one band for any longer than it takes for them to sell 3 albums, its perhaps been due... On Rocksteady, which is definitely more steady than rock, one of those albums that's quite good, but I rarely remember to listen to.
6 Yes Nelly "Hot in herre" Not quite pop for me, but played it as a pop tune so gotta credit it. On Nellyville which I liked, But struggled to get through.
7 No Liberty X  Its kind of annoying when people say things like, "Yeah, I hate hear'say but liberty x aren't manufactured", but they do make better tunes, so its ok. I got the album free, so get off my dick.
8 yes Christina aggrolaya  "Dirrty" Don't start again girls, the best looking bird in pop and I'd gladly kill everyone in this room for a go. And this is how pop will probably sound for the next 12 months.... On her album Stripped, which has one very bad moment, but lots of very good ones too.
9 No Holly Valence "Kiss Kiss" its true I didn't even see the video to this until n.y.eve, and I wasn't disappointed. She followed up with Down boy, which was pretty good too. Possibly worth risking it on her album, though not for me.
10 No Justin Timberlake fuck my luck, I hated his last incarnation in pop, but this is proof just how good the Neptunes produce pop borderline r'n'b acts.

I've been told by some real hip hop heads even that Justified the album is great, so I'm gonna get it.

Worst  song 2002 "Dj Sammy" Heaven. If I'm honest this isn't the worst song - for me Eminems contradictory whingefest "Cleaning out my closet" was - however, the plaudits go to This Bri Adams trance cover, as in a year that brought us seemingly as close to the death of commercial dance as we've been, its the sludge of all the girly vocal crap that might just push it over and drown it in a cheesy mire of shrieking shite.... Hopefully however it will survive, and if you ask me it will be House music scene that continues to make great music, just as it has for the last 10 years with the odd one breaking through for commercial success, as opposed to nonsense insta hits...

top three albums of 2002 artist title go on then..
1 Mushroomhead Xx It's quite a proggy album, which appeals to the snobby side of me, and isn't something with many, if any, obvious singles on it, which also means it will simply "last longer". If you wish to look like a fool, simply say "oh mushroomhead just copy slipknot don't they?". Because other that masks, they really don't have much in common.
2 Stonesour Stonesour if you are expecting this to be just Slipknot 2 then  you'd be wrong, however, if you don't like the 'knot this is close enough for you to also not like this. Corey's vocal range is unbelievable!
3 Murder Dolls Into the vally of the Murder Dolls   In a top three albums drenched in Slipknot references, this is the most different album of them. This is a great cheesy glam rock outing, like the best of Andrew WK times the Deep and meaningful lyrics of Tenacious D. Funny, not cool, GREAT!

Honourable mentions 2002: Didn't want to get too bogged under with charts, so here are some other things that should get a mention. The Best rock single of last year for me was Korn's "Here to stay", N.O.R.E.'s "Nothin" was the  best hip hop single for me. It was, in my opinion a fucking dire year for Dance music, but for the trainspotters amongst you I'd say the best Dance track of 2002 that wasn't a remix cover or dodgey re release with added bird would be Narcotic Thrust's "Safe from harm".... and needles to say the greatest film of the year was "Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the clones".
